A brutal night in Ungdomshuset: Veneration of Death

The lineup for this brutal beast of a
death metal-night, 8/12 2012, was (in order of performance) REVERIE (cph),
SULPHUROUS (cph), MOLD (cph), LVCYFIRE (uk/gr), VORUM (fin) and
DEGIAL (se). For me, the best part of the night was definately seeing
the local bands. I'm pretty new to reviewing (especially death
metal), and also had a couple of shifts on the night, as well as a
liking to alcoholic bewerages, so if shits wrong or missing thats
why...
REVERIE was the youngest of the bunch
(both in age of band and its members), and threw a very good gig for
their debut. Old-school death with a thrashy sound to it, some times
with riffs that sounded black metal-ish. These guys definately like
Venom and Bathory, thats for sure. Very guitar-based, and less
double-pedal driven than todays standard so to speak.
SULPHUROUS played their second concert
in total this night. Last time i saw them was at a small local gig at
Ungdomshuset, where i really liked it, but this time it was even
better. Very tight, heavy and dark death, with much focus on
atmospheric solos, which fitted well together with some spooky
audioclips, before, during and after the concert. Good combination of
fast-paced double-pedal driven pieces and slow, bassy – almost
doom-metal-y – middleparts, intros and outros.
Unfortunately i was kinda busy during
MOLD, but i saw about half their gig, which was really good. These
guys have played many recent gigs, tight shit. The guitar-sound is
much like Undergang (explained by some a double-member), but the
style more like the earliest Bolt Thrower-records, and other
old-school death. Good combo! Personally i like a little higher
volume on the vocals, but on the other hand it fits their style. As
Sulphorous, this is heavy and bass-driven stuff.
LVCYFIRE was on the other hand really
not my thing. I know i'm going into a dangerous discussion here, but
i don't like triggers on double pedals. The songs are good, the riffs are
good, the vocals are good, but the drums ruined it for me. I spoke to
a drummer i know during the night, and he absolutely loved this band, so maybe,
if you're into technical drums, this is your thing. Some of my
friends liked it a lot, one of them saying ”this is good, because
it is not your standard death metal”.
Out of the foreign bands, this was my
favorite, mostly because of their on-stage energy. Some of the
bandmembers had the weidest bone-necklaces which looked like
something from a dead moose, and all had the meanest facial
expressions. I am also pretty sure the lead-guitar player is Manowars
5th member. Very enjoyable liveband! Musically, totally
straight forward, fastpaced death, not much to say.
Last band slowed things a little down
with some cathcy intros and outros, which was probably good
considering the tempo of the last two bands. More in style with the
locals, these guys where also going for that heavy, bassy stuff mixed
with fast parts, rather than whole fast-tempo tracks. They where also
a good act, some badass gore-makeup and a lot of upside-down crosses.
I didn't see much of them because i was very ”tired” (read: drunk), so this is all you get...

The rest of the night was a good party
with DJ Torturdöd being a living death-jukebox, and a drinksbar to
provide next days headaches.
Overall a great night at Ungdomshuset
as usual, and without a doubt, top-quality bands with good variation.

Some new releases and blogs surfaced recently. Here's a short overview, although its not a full coverage:

SLAMBERTS_BLOG is a new site with focus on reviews of gigs, releases and the like, all punk-related.
INFECTED EYES is a blog by the guy who used to do Death Before Apathy. Focus is on punk history and link collection, and in time, it will become a distro too.
And "old" stuff deserving more attention:
FRANCO RADIO is part of the Christianshavn radio-crew, and has focus on everything dirty and underground, of course with a rock/punk/hardcore/metal-approach.
PASSIVE/AGGESSIVE is actually a quite huge and wellknown blog, but i think a lot of you don't know its there. Covering well-hidden parts of the underground diy punk/hc/metal/etc. community in Copenhagen, it's well worth a look to see whats on the move in this town.

Some new local (and semi-local) releases (corrected)
More new local releases during the summer/late summer, actually so many that i have only chosen a few that i particularly liked/wanted to share, since covering all of it would be too much (count on that style in the future by the way). Also please note that i suck bad at reviews, so this will be as short as possible, mostly to inform about the releases.
COMMIE COWBOYS - EP 7''
One of K-Towns newer hc-outfits has just released their first EP (although not their first recordings). The record contains 6 (oops, i wrote wrong here, it's 6, not 3...) tracks with a distinct k-town hc touch to it, quick and catchy, but also a lot of Black Flag/80's us-elements. You can clearly hear that these guys have evolved a lot creating this record. The record itself comes in two colors, standard black vinyl and a fucking awesome red one, which i really like. Graphic is easy and simple, and again i must say, that their band-name must be one of the best ones ever.
Get it from the band itself or at Ungdomshusets distro in the bookcafé.
KTDF 2012 FESTIVAL TAPES
This release was made by the Kill Town
crew for this years festival. Containing 2 hours of death and 25
different artists, i think the 60 kr. is well spent on this one. I don't
want to talk about the musical side of the release, since the artists,
what they sound like etc., should be obvious to all. The only thing i
want to add here is, that the sound quality is quite good for a tape,
and that i like the way it is mastered for tape a lot. Sounds very oldschool!
The tapes (yes there are two in total) comes in a super nice packaging with innersleeves for each tape, a nice little poster and in general a good feel to it. One of the highest quality releases i've seen for a while!

MOLD - KTDF PROMO TAPE
This tape was released at the Kill Town-festival, and holds the first and latest (i think) recordings from Mold. The tape is simple as fuck, no extra bullshit, fancy drawings, pictures etc., just the logo a few words and the tape. I like that. Definately some highquality stuff.
Reminds me a little of the earliest Bolt Thrower, but way more chaotic and uncontrollable. I really dig the vocals!
Mold themselves tells me (thanks for the comment, hehe), that there was 99 pcs and they have all been sold out unfortunately.
NUCLEAR DEATH TERROR - CHAOS FIRE DEATH 12'' MAXI picture disc
It was a little odd for me to see this one. Good looking, but definately not what you imagine if someone says NDT. Recorded in Japan on the latest tour, the record consists of music performed by the NDT with its original members, but it has afterwards been released by the new NDT-crew, which can clearly be seen on the artwork. I just want to note here, that i really dig the graphical style of this release, but definately were more into the former stuff. Guess its all about taste.
For the music part, i have no complaints whatsoever. Here you get exactly what you'd expect from a NDT release. High-quality, crushingly dark d-beat scandicrust, continuing in the same direction as the earlier stuff, which is a good thing. The record holds 4 tracks, and have been limited to 666 copies, so hurry it up if you wanna get one.

SULPHOROUS - S/T TAPE
A new deathmetal spawn out of Copenhagen delivers a 2-track extremely dirty sounding tape, fitting their style. Inspired by Deicide and the like, with a lot of slow and heavy parts. Has so far only done 1 gig i think (at the Ungdomshuset), and i am sure looking forward to hear more from them. Tape is released with a cover pretty similar to Mold's.
Only 50 handnumbered copies was released in the first press. More will be out soon according to Serpent Pulse recs.

Important dates in OCTOBER 2012
Ungdomshuset will host a special 4-day 30th-anniversary party in october 24th-28th. During theese days there will be lots of different music, but what is most interesting for all you punk/d-beat/hardcore/metal-lovers out there is friday the 26th. This will be the "rock and the like" day, on which one or more old bands will reunite for this one time only. I can't tell you what it is yet, but damn is it good. So be sure to mark a big fat X in your calendar, i promise you will regret it forever if you're not there. Also shitloads of the best local acts will be there!

New Gothenburg-based crust-act: Swordwielder
A new Gothenburg-based crustact has seen the light of the day. SWORDWIELDER sounds very similar to Axegrinder, slow, dark and dystopic, but speeds a little up in the riffs and adds a some cleaner vocals, more similar to many other newer swedish crust-acts. Good combination if you ask me.

Evil grindcore, and i mean very evil. Some of the best stuff around according to people involved in that scene. Dead Instrument has just released a new LP by the way.

Up for traveling? Metal festival, many decent names on the programme, and the site is very nice. I can in NO WAY recommend Hell, man they suck ass. One band i definately CAN recommend is Antichrist who ruled at Muskelrock.

Chaos fucking rules

Fucking amazing times where had at the 2012 edition of Ungdomshusets punk-festival. I think the videos and links above pretty much summarizes it all.
For you who didn't show up, Terveet Kädet and Deviated Instinct still fucking rules, and you can't hear any bit that they've gotten older. Amazing!
Other memorable concerts would be Infernöh (with one of the most insane moshpits ever to happen in Ungdomshuset, apparently), Death Token (with a seriously good set-list) and Warprayer (which you have to check out NOW if you don't know them already).
A 2013 edition will probably happen, so keep an eye on that.

For me, the most central event of this month will be the K-Town Hardcore festival, not only because i am involved in the whole thing, but also because so many new bands will be playing there as well as some of my personal favourites. May 25th: DAD goes back to the roots
Now, why is this special, and why do i mention it?
First of all i wanna give kudos to DAD for doing this. For those of you who don't know them (mostly non-danes i suppose), DAD is one of the biggest (and in my book best) hardrock bands Denmark can muster nowadays, and their history goes back to the old Ungdomshuset at Jagtvej, where they played their first concerts and originate from. It is so fucking nice that bands like DAD still remember where they come from and supports the underground! Way to many bands tend to forget this when they get a taste of the bittersweet life of being a rock-star.
Secondly, Ungdomshuset needs money. Bad. Not many speak about this, but this is the case...

Releases to take note of
New and new, well.. I guess that it's really me being slow. If you want to know where the different places i refer to are situated, look here. Tell me if i forgot something.
Well, but here goes (in alphabetic order):
Moonless has finally released their 12'' (s/t) on Hjernespind (an american version is availible aswell, but its a little more expensive). I highly recommend this masterpiece, featuring some serious headbanging material. Get it at Repo Man. Read a review here.
Sepsis (my band by the way) has just released a demo-tape featuring six tracks, crusty stuff with a stenchy sound. Find it at our concerts or at Ungdomshuset (in time maybe at Repo Man).
Solbrud has released their debut-12'' (s/t) with an interesting approach to black. Very wellplayed, and not boring at any point (as i tend to think newer black otherwise can be).
Torpedo Zombies is an older solo-project, doing crazy electro-zombie-punk. The actual band is now beginning to get formed it seems (with a possible member from Chainsaw Eaters??). A 7-inch is out, which you can buy at Repo Man. I recommend the record if you're into lyrically into The Snipers and musically into Chainsaw Eaters.
Tumor Warlord will this weekend release a second 7-inch called "Subway Gas Attack" (very japan-friendly title there...). I am sure you'll be able to find that one at Repoman as well. I myself have a fetish for electropunk so i'll have one. Read a review here.
Undergang has recently done a new 12-inch, released on Xtreem (it is also availible on cd). The record is named "Til Døden Os Skiller". Read a review here.
Wormridden is a new, brutal, death metal constellation with one member from Anatomia and one from Undergang. They have just released a demo-tape, and if you want it, i suggest you go and buy it soon (limited copies it seems). Read a review here. Get it from Extremely Rotten Records.

Sepsis: Demo out, and me taking a very short hiatus

Just to spread the word, the friday 13th gig at Ungdomshuset is cancelled. There is a gig at Huset i Magstræde starting at 21.00 on the same day if you're up for a punk-gig that night.

21st: INSTINCT OF SURVIVAL (de) + AVFART 33 (se) + SEPSIS (k-town) @ Elværket in Helsingør, 16-very late. Door 40 kr. Heavy duty gig, and i've mentioned it before. New since then: Instinct of Survival are supposedly doing new tracks at their current gigs, and Sepsis will release a demo for you to buy at the gig.
